Triphala: The Ayurvedic Powerhouse for Digestion, Detox, and Daily Wellness

Updated: Apr 30

Nature holds an abundance of benefits hidden inside the parts of many different kinds of plants. Triphala is a staple herb combination used in Ayurvedic practice due to it’s wide variety of benefits as well as it’s compatibility with most physiologies. It is a rich source of Vitamin C, full of anti-oxidants and is naturally anti-inflammatory. It is used most for it’s ability to cleanse, nourish and strengthen the digest system and improve overall colon health while also improving general health and well-being.

Triphala is composed of 3 fruits: Haritaki, Amalaki, Bibhitaki, naturally combining the energies of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha respectively in one herbal formula.

Each fruit in Triphala contributes unique therapeutic properties:

  • Haritak (Vata)i is often referred to as the “king of medicines” in Ayurveda. It promotes regular bowel movements, rejuvenates the tissues, and supports cognitive function.

  • Amalaki (Pitta) is a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants. It supports immune health, enhances skin radiance, and promotes a healthy metabolism.

  • Bibhitaki (Kapha) is known for its detoxifying effects, especially on the lungs and blood. It also supports fat metabolism and is considered beneficial for weight management.

Triphala is a Rasayana in Ayurveda meaning it is a rejuvenator and a rebuilder. It has positive effects, not only on the digestive system but for the lungs, skin, eyes and can help to modulate weight as part of an overall program due to its bitter and astringent properties.

Triphala is used for its gentle laxative effect, as well as its ability to regulate blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and support oral health, even being used as a mouth rinse to reduce plaque and gum inflammation without synthetic additives.

How to use Triphala:

Start with ½ tsp of the powder soaked in warm water for 5-10 minutes and drink an hour after dinner. This will also help to regulate nighttime snacking before bed!

A Word of Caution

While Triphala is generally well tolerated, it may cause gastrointestinal discomfort in some individuals, especially when starting.
