EMF Exposure: Understanding the Risks and How to Protect Yourself and Your Family

When I was growing up, my mother taught me to store my valuables in my undergarments for safety and convenience if I had no pockets. No undergarment was exempt. This advice must have been universally taught as I have seen many women pull cash (often moist with sweat) from “ intimate places” and hand it to baffled and often horrified cashiers, bankers and other merchants. Today, cash is not the only valuable we hide close to our bodies. We have cell phones, smart watches and other wearable technology worn daily without concern. But these devices are all emitting an electromagnetic field which to those who are susceptible, can cause illness.

Electromagnetic fields or EMFs are invisible areas of energy and are inescapable. There are 4 basic types.

  1. Electrical fields from electrical wiring.

  2. Magnetic fields from power lines and appliances or anything that has a current.

  3. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) or “dirty electricity” caused by anything that clips voltage. These are things like dimmer switches, LED lights and compact lightbulbs.

  4. Radiofrequency (RF) which is microwave radiation, wireless technology, 5G, WIFI and cell phones.

EMF expert Dr Erica Mallery Blythe defined Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity as "A multi-systemic condition characterized by increased sensitivity to electromagnetic fields of increasingly broader frequency ranges and lower intensities”. This is a physical and not a psychological phenomena in its origin.

People who may be more adversely affected by EMF exposure are those with severe or prolonged exposure, people with chronic illness, multiple chemical sensitivity, or toxic mold, poor detoxifiers and those with a reactive limbic system. Dr Logan says, “It is not a question of if you are affected by EMF’s it is a matter to what degree are you affected. We are electrical bodies and our cells are little batteries that are subject to the external influences of EMF’s”.

EMF hypersensitivity can present with a variety of symptoms that are similar to other chronic illnesses and can include insomnia, headache, ringing in the ears, dizziness, brain fog, fatigue and joint pain. Many people will also present with less common symptoms such as vibration sensation, sensations of electrical shock, increased intensity of senses and reversal of the regular sleep-wake cycle.

So how do we protect ourselves and our family? The most important message is distance is the key to limiting exposure as the energy decreases exponentially the further away from the source you are. Start with making the decision to not have electrical devices in the bedroom. Sleep is crucial to healing and detoxification and EMF exposure can disrupt sleep.

Next, test. There are many meters on the market now that test for EMFs. For an overview of meters, I recommend visiting https://www.emfanalysis.com/recommended-emf-meters/ to find which is best for you. Testing will allow you to identify some easy to eliminate sources of excess exposure.

Again, you cannot completely eliminate all exposure but what is left, we want to reduce. Here are a few steps to consider to lower your exposure.

  1. Lower the EMF exposure in your home.

  2. Have a low EMF sleeping area, AKA a sleep sanctuary

  3. Minimize the use of wireless technology

  4. Create a low EMF computing setup/office for working from home.

  5. Speak to your doctor about a personalized detox and exercise program

  6. Eat high quality foods and support detoxification with appropriate supplementation

  7. Commit to practicing stress relieving activities such as prayer and mindfulness

  8. Foster supportive relationships with friends, family and community.
