Have you ever wondered if the lotion you put on your skin, the cleaner you spray on your counter, or the snack you grabbed on the go might be silently affecting your health?
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, constantly fatigued, struggling with skin issues, hormonal imbalances, or unexplained symptoms, you are not alone. Many of our patients come to us feeling like they’re doing "everything right" but still don’t feel like themselves. One of the most overlooked contributors to this puzzle is our daily exposure to environmental toxins.
Our Modern World: A Hidden Chemical Burden
Every day, the average American is exposed to hundreds of chemicals through personal care products, household cleaners, processed foods, plastics, and even the air we breathe. According to a study published in Environmental Science & Technology, over 84,000 chemicals are registered for use in the U.S., yet only a fraction have been thoroughly tested for safety.¹
Conventional medicine tends to focus on acute toxicity, large, single exposures that cause immediate harm. But in functional medicine, we also look at the long-term, low-level exposures that accumulate in the body and may silently impact our cellular function, immune system, hormonal balance, and detoxification pathways over time.
Meet YUKA: A Free App to Help You Shop Smarter
One tool we recommend to our patients is YUKA, a free app that lets you scan barcodes on products like cosmetics, cleaning supplies, and food. It gives each item a score based on ingredients and potential health risks, such as endocrine disruptors, allergens, or carcinogens, and offers safer alternatives.
We’ve found YUKA especially helpful for scanning:
Personal care items (shampoos, deodorants, makeup)
Household cleaning products
Packaged and processed foods
Important Note: While YUKA is a fantastic educational tool, we don’t recommend relying on it for everything you eat, especially fresh, whole foods. The app can sometimes flag nutrient-dense foods for arbitrary reasons (like saturated fat or salt content) without context to your individual needs. For this reason, we recommend working with our certified lifestyle coach to develop a personalized nutrition plan that honors your unique biochemistry, health goals, and preferences.
Small Changes, Big Impact
You don’t need to overhaul your entire life overnight, and we certainly don’t recommend throwing everything out all at once. You’ve spent money on those products, and it’s important to approach this process in a way that feels manageable. Instead, start with what you use most often, maybe your moisturizer, kitchen cleaner, or favorite packaged snack, and begin making safer swaps as you go.
The next time you’re shopping, try scanning products with the YUKA app before you buy. It’s a simple way to make more informed choices and ensure you’re investing in your long-term health. With each small change, you’re lowering your toxin burden and moving toward a cleaner, more supportive environment for your body, and we’re here to help you prioritize what matters most for you.
The Body’s Natural Defense System
Our bodies are designed with powerful detox systems — primarily the liver, kidneys, gut, skin, and lymphatic system — all working together to filter out what doesn’t belong. But when our toxin load exceeds what these systems can handle, the overflow can contribute to:
Chronic fatigue
Brain fog
Hormonal imbalance
Weight gain
Autoimmunity
Inflammation and oxidative stress
Skin conditions like eczema or acne
These issues don’t always appear overnight. Often, they creep in slowly, and are easy to dismiss until they significantly impact your quality of life.
Genetics, Environment, and Lifestyle: The Perfect Storm
Why are some people more affected than others? Genetics can play a role, certain individuals have variations (called SNPs) in detoxification genes like MTHFR, GST, and COMT that reduce their ability to clear toxins efficiently.
But your lifestyle and environment matter just as much. Your body burden increases with each exposure, from pesticide-laden produce and flame-retardant furniture, to phthalates in plastics and parabens in skincare. Reducing that burden starts with awareness and education.
Functional Medicine Solutions to Reduce Your Toxic Load
At our practice, we go beyond simply identifying toxins, we help you heal from their effects. Our approach may include:
Personalized Detox Support: Gentle, evidence-based protocols using targeted nutrients like glutathione, NAC, binders, and herbal supports.
Dietary Optimization: Anti-inflammatory, whole-food plans tailored to your needs, with guidance on when organic or filtered options matter most.
Lab Testing: Assessing toxin levels (such as heavy metals, mold, pesticides), oxidative stress markers, and detoxification capacity.
Lifestyle Upgrades: Recommending low-tox home swaps, air and water filtration, and reducing plastic use.
Support for Elimination Pathways: Helping your liver, lymph, gut, and skin function at their best with the right movement, hydration, and sleep practices.
Final Thoughts
Your body is incredibly resilient, it just needs the right support. At our practice, we take the time to understand your health history, environment, and lifestyle to create a roadmap toward healing that’s as unique as you are.
If you’re ready to start feeling better, reduce your toxic burden, and get personalized support, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our team. Your health is worth it, and we’re here to walk with you every step of the way.
