Combatting Allergies Naturally: A Multisystem Approach to Reduce Symptoms and Improve Immune Health

Updated: Jun 21

Allergies are on the rise in the US and worldwide. Risk factors include: family history, air pollution, exposure to chemicals, infections, smoking/second hand smoke and lack of exposure to allergens in the outdoor environment (hygiene theory) in childhood.

Allergies occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance-such as pollen, bee venom, pet dander or a food that doesn't cause a reaction in most people. It is an exaggerated response by the immune system.

The immune system produces substances known as antibodies. When one has allergies, the immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular allergen as harmful, even though it isn't. When you come into contact with the allergen, your immune system's reaction can inflame your skin, sinuses, airways or digestive system.

The severity of allergies varies from person to person and can range from minor irritation to anaphylaxis — a potentially life-threatening emergency. The traditional treatment of seasonal allergies often relies antihistamines and steroid nasal sprays which can have significant long term consequences. The antihistamine medications block histamine from creating the allergic response in the sinuses or airways but has long reaching effects on all of the histamine receptors that we have in our brain, gut, skin and throughout the entire body. Histamine is also critical for regulating the immune system and blocking this neurotransmitter can negatively affect one’s immune function. It is not advisable to take antihistamines for this reason. These are also used in many of the over the counter sleep products labeled as “PM” such as Tylenol PM or Advil PM.

In order to reduce allergies in general we use a multisystem approach including eliminating other allergic triggers such as dairy, wheat/gluten, soy, eggs and a number of other foods. Restoring the integrity of the nasal mucosa with products such as Ion Restore Nasal Spray and modulating the immune system with injectable peptides to halt the exaggerated response to pollen and other allergens. We also prefer to use natural substances to stabilize the membrane of the mast cells where histamine is stored to reduce symptoms. The best researched compounds include: quercetin, vitamin C, bromelain, N Acetyl Cysteine and stinging nettles. Some of the more products we stock in The Logan Institutes' Pharmacy are: Hist-Assist, Quercetin Complex, and HistaQuel. These products can often provide immediate and long standing relief when used regularly during the allergy season. Also, using a Neti Pot after exposure to known allergens such as pollen can reduce the burden in the nasal cavity and help reduce symptoms. Indoor air filters such as the Austin Air are also helpful to reduce pollens, pet dander and dust as contributors to allergies. Enjoy the beautiful spring and if you are struggling with these issues please schedule a time to discuss with Dr. Litty or myself to determine the most appropriate treatment for you.
