Detoxification is a very beneficial practice, but big cleanses can take a lot of prep and feel very challenging to complete. When feeling overwhelmed by a big cleanse plan or having a health issue that is not compatible with reducing cleanses, a little reset can be a great and effective alternative option. I love to do this 3-day reset during season shifts, after traveling, or as part of a recovery plan when you just need to give your mind and body a break.
This style of cleanse can be great for anyone!
This 3-day reset is easy on the body and gives your digestion a chance to rest and reset improving digestive function, absorption of nutrients and detoxification.
Give the body and mind a break
This Ayurvedic cleanse is very simple. During these 3 days we focus on seasonal fresh vegetables, simple legumes and grains, hydration, and rest. The main steps are:
1. Eat a mono diet of easy to digest, well spiced nourishing food.
a. Generally we use Kitchari as it is a complete meal that meets all the above. Eat this meal for lunch and dinner for 3 days. You can also eat it for breakfast if you are ok having the same meal 3 times a day. You can switch up the vegetables used as you would like. Use fresh and seasonal vegetables as this is what your body is prepared to digest at that time.
b. Breakfast: For breakfast, have kitchari or simple oatmeal.
c. Snacks: It is best to avoid snacking when possible, however, if snacking is necessary
use herbal teas or fresh fruit as your options for snacks. Do not mix fruits with any other foods and do not mix melons or bananas with any other type of fruit.
2. Drink warm and nourishing liquids ie: warm water and gentle herbal teas like Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel (CCF) tea. Avoid iced and sugary drinks. The cooling property of ice stalls the digestive process and allows toxins to accumulate.
3. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and processed sugar sources.
4. Allow for rest and recuperation. While cleansing, it is important to not overdue exercise and stressful situations. Consider regular walking and yoga, tai chi, or
stretching for your main exercise practices during this time. Allow yourself to take a
break from overstimulation and overexertion to connect back with nature
and yourself.
5. Take Triphala to aid in gentle detoxification and nourishing the digestive system. Take 2 tablets at night before bed with warm water.
Easing back In....
After the reset, it important to slowly reintroduce harder to digest foods like animal protein and dairy. I would not recommend eating a cheeseburger on day 4😊. Meals on day 4 should continue to be warm and nourishing. Continue with plant based meals with more variety. Day 6 continue with cooked plant based food and add a little fish or chicken for lunch. Continue this gentle ease back in adding foods back one day at a time to keep the benefit of your improved digestion.
Triphala - You may continue to use the Triphala beyond the 3 days as continued support for the digestive system and gentle detoxification for as long as you would like.
Getting Started:
The next steps are gathering your ingredients and picking your weekend to dive in. The natural pharmacy carries Triphala tablets, One Pot Kitchari, Ghee, and the Kitchari Spice mix. The one pot kitchari includes all the base ingredients needed to make 1 serving of kitchari including spices. You just need to add the vegetables of your choosing and ghee.
The kitchari spice mix will have all the spices you need if you would prefer to avoid buying each spice individually but plan to purchase single ingredients to make larger batches of kitchari.
