Revitalize Your Heart: How Exercise Can Cure Fatigue and Stress

Are you tired of feeling tired and stressed? You may be heart-broken–and I don’t mean that you’ve got no Valentine. But good news, you can fix your broken heart with exercise. Exercise has many benefits on the body, both physically and mentally. Today, we are focusing on how exercise helps the heart. The heart is a muscle and just like any muscle it can and should be strengthened. By performing regular aerobic and resistance exercises we can strengthen the heart, no matter your age. Regular exercise has been shown to decrease a person’s blood pressure, increase their HDLs, decrease their LDLs, increase lean muscle mass, help regulate diabetes and decrease chronic inflammation.

By performing a combination of resistance and aerobic training 3 to 5 times per week you will increase the cardiac output of the heart. Cardiac output is the amount of blood pumped during each heartbeat. Increasing your cardiac output decreases the demand on the heart because the heart pumps the same amount of blood at a lower heart rate. This leads to a decrease in blood pressure as well. You will quickly start to notice that your heart rate won’t become as high when doing the same activities as before. The decrease in heart rate at the same intensity indicates that the heart is getting stronger and that it is time to increase the intensity. At Hoffacker Health and Fitness we use heart rate monitors to track heart rate and can determine what your heart rate should be while exercising. We can design a personalized cardio prescription that meets your needs.

Aerobic and resistance exercise looks different for everyone. For people starting out, going for a walk, or riding a recumbent bike could be enough to stimulate change. For resistance training, standing up and sitting down in a chair 10 times in a row is a great place to start. For other people they might need to go for a run or lift heavy weights, but each person starts somewhere, and we would love to help you on that journey. We meet each patient where they are and create a plan to help them achieve their goals.
