Mind-Body Connection: The Essential Link Between Physical Exercise and Mental Well-Being

Let's talk about your mental and physical health and how they are inextricably linked together. Here's a typical conversation I have with many of my clients:

Me: "What did you do this weekend for movement and exercise?"

Client: "Well, I was going to (insert your favorite activity here) but (insert your favorite excuse here)"

Me: "So basically you didn't feel like moving."

Client: "Pretty much."

Me: "That's all right! You're here with me now, so let's get moving!"

A big part of my job is helping clients overcome this very thing--helping them recognize that movement produces an uplifting, energizing effect when it is done in the appropriate amount to meet their unique needs of the moment. Even if their brain isn't feeling it, so to speak.

Feelings and emotions are produced by electrochemical signals in response to our interaction with the world around us. These electrochemical signals don't exist exclusively in the brain. Yes, feelings and emotions sometimes originate there, but the BODY can also contribute to the creation of feelings and emotions. This cyclical pattern is important for us to understand as we attempt to achieve our goal of optimal wellness.

Simply put, Feelings don't produce action--Action produces feelings. With this in mind, the next time you don't feel like exercising because your brain is producing a feeling of tiredness or an emotion of boredom, try to become aware of these feelings and emotions and begin to move and exercise in spite of these feelings. The activation of the muscles and the body's energy system (the heart and lungs) will cause the body to produce feelings and emotions that counter the initial negative feelings and emotions.
