This Norwegian study looked at over 1500 participants over the course of 5 years.
The mean age of the participants was 72.8 years
The participants were grouped equally into 3 groups of exercise types
The Control Group was essentially asked to do five half-hour Moderate Intensity Continuous Training (MICT) sessions per week.
The MICT Group was asked to do five MICT sessions per week with three sessions lasting 30 minutes and two sessions lasting 20 minutes longer.
The High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) group was asked to do three 30-minute MICT sessions per week and two HIIT sessions per week.
The Bottom Line:
ALL groups reduced their mortality rate.
When compared to the control group, the HIIT group's all cause mortality rate was 37% lower.
When compared to the MICT group, the HIIT group's all cause mortality rate was 49% lower
