Causes of Aging
Inflammation | The silent spark behind many chronic diseases.
Periodontal disease (gum disease) is more than a dental issue, it’s been linked to heart disease due to the spread of inflammatory bacteria through the bloodstream.
Metabolic dysfunction, like insulin resistance (pre-diabetes/diabetes), leads to chronic low-grade inflammation that damages blood vessels and organs over time.
“Inflammaging” is a term for the persistent, low-level inflammation that accelerates aging. Key blood markers include hs-CRP, IL-6, homocysteine, and DNA methylation age, which reflect how your body is aging at the cellular level.
Dietary triggers like excess omega-6 intake from seed oils and processed foods. Many patients we treat show an imbalanced omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, often 10:1 or higher, when the ideal range is closer to 3:1 or 1:1. This skewed ratio can promote systemic inflammation and disrupt cellular signaling.
Mitochondrial Dysfunction | When your cellular power plants start to fail.
Mitochondria produce energy for every cell. Damage from poor diet, toxins, or aging can reduce their efficiency, leading to fatigue and disease.
Some animal studies suggest that certain fats (like those in processed seed oils) may impair mitochondrial function, though human data is mixed.
Hormonal Decline | The body’s internal messengers fade with age.
Hormones like testosterone, DHEA, Progesterone, Estradiol, thyroid hormones, Human Growth Hormone (IGF-1), and cortisol regulate energy, muscle mass, mood, and metabolism.
Testing and optimizing these levels may help maintain vitality and slow age-related decline.
Ideal Baseline Assessment for Comprehensive Diagnostics
Standard labs: Fasting glucose, metabolic panel, CBC, standard lipid panel, liver/kidney function, vitamin D, thyroid, blood hormone testing etc.
Advanced Diagnostic Testing includes: HbA1c, insulin resistance score, continuous blood glucose monitoring, lipid panel with NMR, hs-CRP, oxLDL and other inflammatory markers, liver fibrosis panel (screen for fatty liver), kidney profile/cystatin C, saliva/urine hormone testing (Precision Diagnostics), micronutrient levels (Vibrant Health Laboratory), gut microbiome test, oral DNA, CBCT (cone beam CT scan) of the mouth to evaluate for chronic low grade infection in previous extraction sites including wisdom teeth and root canal treated to determine if there is an underlying source for chronic inflammation
Blood pressure (including home monitoring)
Body composition: weight, BMI, waist circumference, lean muscle mass
Functional tests: hand‐grip strength, gait speed (e.g., 4-meter walk), balance check, v02 max
Review lifestyle: diet, physical activity level, sleep quality, stress levels, social engagement, smoking/alcohol history
Longevity & Healthspan
Can We Influence Healthspan?
Yes, your daily habits and biomarkers can predict and improve how long you stay healthy.
Is Biohacking a Proven Strategy?
It’s not science fiction, it’s self-monitoring with purpose.
Intermittent fasting activates cellular repair, reduces inflammation, and improves metabolism by switching the body from sugar-burning to fat-burning.
Sleep tracking with devices like Whoop or Oura Ring helps optimize recovery, detect stress, and improve heart rate variability (HRV), a key marker of resilience.
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) reveal how your body responds to food, helping prevent insulin resistance and metabolic disease.
Functional fitness, grip strength, gait speed, and balance, are powerful predictors of longevity and independence.
Stress management is critical. Chronic stress raises cortisol, which spikes blood sugar and accelerates aging.
Biohacking at Home

Austin Air Purifiers: Remove airborne toxins, allergens, and mold with HEPA and activated carbon filtration, ideal for respiratory and immune health.
Peptides & Regeneration
Peptide Decline with Age
Peptides are short proteins that signal healing, metabolism, and brain function, but they decline over time.
Dr. Vladimir Khavinson, a Russian gerontologist, has published over 700 studies on peptide bioregulators that may support organ repair, immune function, and cognitive health.
Common Peptides
BPC157: Facilitates repair of damaged tissues including arterial walls, intestinal mucosa and a variety of other tissues
KPV: Shown to reduce intestinal inflammation caused by a variety of conditions
DiHexa: This has positive effects on the production of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to support cognitive function and possible brain cell regeneration
Regenerative Therapies
PRF & PRP | Your blood, reimagined as a healing tool.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) are derived from your own blood and rich in growth factors.
Once separated from the patient's blood PRF or PRP are injected near the site of injury providing the body with a concentrated form of the same growth factors it uses to heal on its own. They stimulate tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and are used in orthopedics, dentistry, and aesthetics.
Uses in Aesthetics
In aesthetic medicine, PRF is a powerful tool for skin rejuvenation and scar repair. We often combine it with microneedling to enhance collagen production and accelerate healing in aging skin, acne scars, and surgical scars. The microchannels created by microneedling allow PRF to penetrate deeply, amplifying its regenerative effects. In some cases, we even create a PRF-based face mask, infusing the skin with growth factors in a gentle, topical format. The result is improved texture, tone, and elasticity, with minimal downtime and natural-looking outcomes.
Uses in Orthopedics
In orthopedic care, PRF is used to treat a wide range of soft tissue injuries, both chronic and acute. Whether it’s tendonitis, ligament sprains, or joint inflammation, PRF delivers concentrated healing signals directly to the site of injury. We’ve seen remarkable success helping patients recover from conditions like tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, and rotator cuff irritation. By enhancing the body’s own repair mechanisms, PRF helps restore mobility, reduce pain, and get people back to the activities they love, without relying on steroids or surgery.
Dr. Rick Miron has pioneered PRF protocols that enhance stem cell recruitment and healing.
Stem Cell Therapy | Rebuilding from within.
Adipose-derived stem cells (from your own fat) are being studied for joint repair, nerve regeneration, and even cognitive support.
These cells can become bone, cartilage, or nerve tissue, offering hope for conditions like osteoarthritis and neurodegeneration.
Stem Cell Banking: Collecting and storing one’s own stem cells while you're healthy preserves their regenerative potential for future use. These cells may be used in personalized therapies as regenerative medicine evolves, especially for orthopedic, immune, and neurological conditions. Banked stem cells can also be used by immediate family members!
Donor-Derived Stem Cells: Stem cells from placental or umbilical cord tissue are also being explored for their regenerative properties. While promising, they may carry different immune or ethical considerations compared to autologous (self-derived) cells. At The Logan Institute we do not advocate for the use of donor derived stem cells.
Supplementation To Support Longevity
How to Supplement Correctly | Targeted, consistent, and science-backed.
Supplements work best when they’re personalized to your body’s needs. Start by getting tested for nutrient deficiencies, common labs can assess levels of vitamin D, B12, magnesium, omega-3s, and more. Once you know what’s missing, choose high-quality supplements with efficacious doses, meaning the amount matches what research shows to be effective. Take them consistently, ideally at the same time each day, and monitor how you feel. Re-test every 3-6 months to track progress and adjust as needed. Supplementing isn’t a one-time fix, it’s a cycle of testing, dosing, and refining to support long-term health.
Supplement Safety & Quality | Navigating the supplement industry with confidence.
While supplements can support longevity, the industry is largely unregulated, meaning not all products are created equal. Some brands may use low-quality ingredients, ineffective doses, or misleading labels. To protect your health and investment:
Buy directly from the manufacturer or from trusted retail pharmacies with transparent sourcing and third-party testing.
Avoid generic online marketplaces where counterfeit or expired products may circulate.
Check for efficacious doses, meaning the amount of each ingredient matches what research shows to be effective.
Look for certifications like NSF, USP, or GMP, which indicate quality control and purity.
Be skeptical of “proprietary blends” that hide ingredient amounts behind vague formulas.
Consult your physician or pharmacist before starting new supplements, especially if you take medications or have chronic conditions.
Supplements can be powerful tools, but only when chosen wisely and integrated into a broader health strategy.

Optimizing or replacing these hormones to slow aging has mixed evidence. In fact, hormone-replacement therapies often produce adverse effects outweighing benefits[11], so hormone optimization to extend lifespan is not proven. | Pataky, M. W., Young, W. F., & Nair, K. S. Muscular strength as predictor of mortality: a meta-analysis. Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 99(9), 1893–1903.[15] |
Chronic stress elevates cortisol chronically, which spikes blood sugar and promotes inflammation; sustained stress has been linked to accelerated aging (e.g. via telomere shortening). Cortisol “mediates the stress response and regulates metabolism”[10]. | Thau et al. (2023). Physiology, Cortisol. StatPearls [Internet][10] |
BPC‑157 (a peptide from gastric juices) has shown tissue‑healing and angiogenic effects in many animal studies[16], but human clinical data are minimal, so its clinical efficacy is not established. | Szijártó, A., et al.
